Friday Food Facts

Hello and Welcome!

Come on in, sit down and stay awhile. Today is Friday Food Facts - enjoy!

A1 STEAK SAUCE

A1 Steak Sauce is said to have been created sometime in the late 1820's by Henderson William Brand, the Chef to England's King George IV. The king was so pleased with the new sauce, he proclaimed it ‘A number 1’ - or ‘A1’ for short.

After the king's death in 1830, Brand started his own business producing meat extracts along with A1 Sauce. The sauce became popular with the public, and won awards at international expositions in London and Paris between 1862 and 1900. G.F Heublein & Bros. (a major wine and spirit importer) began to import A1 Steak Sauce to America in 1906, eventually purchased the rights to the sauce and in 1918 began manufacturing A1 in Hartford, Connecticut.

During Prohibition, which destroyed many other wine and spirits producers, sales of A1 Steak Sauce is said to have enabled Heublein to survive. After several acquisitions and mergers, A1 Steak Sauce is now produced by by Kraft Foods in the U.S. and by Renée's Gourmet Foods in Canada

FETTUCCINE ALFREDO

Fettuccine Alfredo was created during the 1920s by restaurateur Alfredo di Lelio, at his restaurant in Rome, 'Alfredo all'Augusteo'. The original consisted of butter, cream, fresh ground black pepper and Parmesan cheese.

ALUMINUM CANS

Aluminum cans are thinner than 2 pages of a glossy magazine page, weigh less than ½ ounce, and can withstand more than 90 pounds per square inch of pressure (3 times the pressure of a car tire!).

The first 12 oz aluminum can was introduced by Royal Crown Cola in 1964. It wasn't until 3 years later that Coke started using the aluminum can. Aluminum was introduced in metal can making in 1957.

Aluminum beverage cans were introduced in 1964, and by 1985 the dominated the beverage market. Every day more than 90 million aluminum cans are produced, and about half of them end up being recycled.

Take Out Thursday!

Hello and Welcome!

I have decided to change the topic for Thursdays. Instead of recipes or specific food features, I am going to feature my favorite restaurants from around the world. The common link among them is that you are able to order takeout!

Enjoy!

My hands down, no holds barred, favorite restaurant is Yank Sing! Unfortunately for me, it is located in San Francisco and I live in New York. For those of you who are fortunate enough to live in the Bay area I am jealous! YOU ARE SO LUCKY!!!

I love this restaurant so much that I have asked them to ship me orders via federal express! (which they politely declined.)

Yank Sing specializes in deem sum or dim sum. Dim sum is the name for a Chinese cuisine which involves a wide range of light dishes served alongside Chinese tea. Yum Cha (literally "drinking tea") is the term used to describe the entire dining experience. It is usually served in the mornings until noon time at Chinese restaurants and at specialty dim sum eateries, such as Yank Sing, where typical dishes are available throughout the day. Dishes come in small portions and may include meat, seafood, and vegetables, as well as desserts and fruit. The items are usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate.

At Yank Sing you are seated and a small card is placed on your table. You can order your beverage of choice and then that is when the FUN begins! Servers walk around the restaurant pushing carts filled with various type of deem sum. They will come up to your table, answer any questions you may have and offer you the selection on their cart. You can pick as many or little deem sum from that particular cart. Once your choices have been made the server takes a small stamp and marks your choices on the card left on your table. Throughout your meal many different carts will make their appearance, offering you A LOT of choices!

- A Yank Sing signature dish of minced Kurobuta Pork, scallion and ginger wrapped and steamed in its own aromatic broth.

- Fragrant and light creamy gelatin of golden ripe mango, served chilled.

Eating at Yank Sing is such a fun experience. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the food is out-of-this-world and the staff is great! The last time my husband and I ate there we spent over 2.5 hours eating, talking and enjoying!

If you get the chance, I highly recommend a meal at Yank Sing!

Until Tomorrow: Go Ahead and Indulge!

Tasty Tuesday!

Hello!

I hope everyone is doing well!
We are now in the throes of the Christmas season - is everyone as busy as I am?

Today I would like to feature some tasty goodies that my family and I love!

Enjoy!

Gingerbread Coffeecake

This coffeecake's dark, mysterious, gingery flavor will appeal to everyone.

Beyond the usual great base of real butter, flour and fresh eggs, the pastry masters at Zingerman's use an array of ingredients to make this coffeecake. Crystallized and ground ginger, lots of dark molasses, a bit of brewed coffee, a splash of fresh orange juice, Indonesian cinnamon, cloves and Balinese long pepper.

Italian Torrone

This does not last long in our home!

A celebratory tradition since the 15th century, this Italian delight is created by master confectioners who handcraft the soft nougat from prized Piedmontese hazelnuts, almonds, honey and spices. The Pistachio torrone features crunchy pistachio nuts from Bronte, Sicily.

Francis Coppola Diamond Claret

My husband and I love this wine and keep a couple bottles on hand at all times.

Coppola's Claret is always very good, but this year it’s fantastic! It is very lush and smooth, with a great flavor, and lovely aromas. When served with classic dishes such as beef stroganoff, leg of lamb or potato's, you can create a wonderful dining experience.

Italian Cheese Plate

No matter how you serve them, your guests will love the three Italian cheeses in this collection. Robiola Bosina (my favorite) is a soft-ripened cow's and sheep's milk cheese with a mellow cream and wild mushroom flavor. Dolce Gorgonzola is a creamy sweet and salty blue cheese. And Taleggio is a mild, washed-rind cheese with a fruity tang and salt-studded crust.

Until tomorrow: Go Ahead & Indulge!
