Friday Favorites: 2/19/2010

Hello! I hope everyone is doing well! I have returned from vacation and I am ready to get back in to the swing of everyday life! It is nice to be home, but I miss the bright Florida sunshine!!

In honor of sun and warmth, today I would like to feature my favorite flower: The Periwinkle Hydrangea. These beautiful flowers are so cheery, you cannot help but smile when you see them!

"My green thumb came only as a result of the mistakes I made while learning to see things from the plant's point of view."
-H. Fred Dale

Hydrangeas are a genus of about 70–75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia and North and South America. The greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia. Most are shrubs 1–3 m tall. Hydrangeas can be deciduous or evergreen, although the most widely cultivated species are deciduous.

Hydrangea flowers are produced from early spring to late autumn and grow in flower-heads at the end of their stems. In many species, the flower-heads contain two types of flowers, small fertile flowers in the middle of the flower-head, and large, sterile flowers in a ring around the edge of each flower-head.

Hydrangeas come in 2 flower arrangements: Mop-head and lace-cap. Mop-head flowers are large round flower-heads that resemble pom-poms, or as the name implies, look like the head of a mop. Lace-cap flowers bear round, flat flower-heads with a center core of subdued flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy flowers.

"It is a golden maxim to cultivate the garden for the nose, and the eyes will take care of themselves."
-Robert Louis Stevenson

Friday Food Facts

Hello and Welcome!

Come on in, sit down and stay awhile. Today is Friday Food Facts - enjoy!

A1 STEAK SAUCE

A1 Steak Sauce is said to have been created sometime in the late 1820's by Henderson William Brand, the Chef to England's King George IV. The king was so pleased with the new sauce, he proclaimed it ‘A number 1’ - or ‘A1’ for short.

After the king's death in 1830, Brand started his own business producing meat extracts along with A1 Sauce. The sauce became popular with the public, and won awards at international expositions in London and Paris between 1862 and 1900. G.F Heublein & Bros. (a major wine and spirit importer) began to import A1 Steak Sauce to America in 1906, eventually purchased the rights to the sauce and in 1918 began manufacturing A1 in Hartford, Connecticut.

During Prohibition, which destroyed many other wine and spirits producers, sales of A1 Steak Sauce is said to have enabled Heublein to survive. After several acquisitions and mergers, A1 Steak Sauce is now produced by by Kraft Foods in the U.S. and by Renée's Gourmet Foods in Canada

FETTUCCINE ALFREDO

Fettuccine Alfredo was created during the 1920s by restaurateur Alfredo di Lelio, at his restaurant in Rome, 'Alfredo all'Augusteo'. The original consisted of butter, cream, fresh ground black pepper and Parmesan cheese.

ALUMINUM CANS

Aluminum cans are thinner than 2 pages of a glossy magazine page, weigh less than ½ ounce, and can withstand more than 90 pounds per square inch of pressure (3 times the pressure of a car tire!).

The first 12 oz aluminum can was introduced by Royal Crown Cola in 1964. It wasn't until 3 years later that Coke started using the aluminum can. Aluminum was introduced in metal can making in 1957.

Aluminum beverage cans were introduced in 1964, and by 1985 the dominated the beverage market. Every day more than 90 million aluminum cans are produced, and about half of them end up being recycled.

Turkey Gravy

Turkey gravy is the perfect complement to roast turkey. It is especially delicious when made from the pan juices, enhanced with turkey or chicken stock.

Servings: 2.5 Cups

Ingredients:

* Pan drippings from roasted turkey
* 3/4 cup water
* 3 Tbs. unsalted butter
* 3 Tbs. all-purpose flour
* 2 cups turkey or chicken stock, lightly salted
* Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Directions:

1.) Skim and discard any fat from the turkey drippings in the roasting pan.
2.) Add the water to the pan and set over medium heat.
3.) Boil for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom and sides of the pan.
4.) Transfer to a bowl.
5.) In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
6.) When the butter bubbles, add the flour and stir rapidly for a few seconds to cook the flour.
7.) Rapidly whisk in the reserved pan drippings and the stock.
8.) Cook until the gravy is smooth and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, 1 to 2 minutes.
9.) Season with salt and pepper.
10.) Pour the gravy into a warmed sauce-boat or wide-mouthed pitcher for serving.

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you," that would suffice.

5.) Add the half-and-half and, using a fork, stir to form large, moist clumps.
6.) Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
7.) With floured hands, press the dough together to form a large ball.
8.) Roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness, dusting with more flour as needed.
9.) Using a 3-inch round cookie cutter, cut out the dough and transfer the rounds to an ungreased baking sheet; gather the scraps and repeat.
10.) Bake, rotating the pan once halfway through baking, until the biscuits are golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes.

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.

Foodie Friday!

Yeah it is Friday!
However, as a SAHM I really do not think that holds much meaning. Do you?

Since every place I look is all gun-ho for Christmas, I decided to focus on the holiday that gets lost in the mix:

Thanksgiving!!!!!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! I mean what is not to love? Family, Food and Fun!

Oh and did I mention food?

We usually, much to my chagrin, go away for Thanksgiving!

However - this year everyone is coming to my home! I am so excited - I have not cooked an "OFFICIAL" Thanksgiving meal in 3 years!!!

I have my tried and true favorites and have already purchased many of them!

Today I will be sharing these wonderful products and in upcoming posts will share recipes using these ingredients!

Tuesday I headed to the mall and hit my FAVORITE store: Williams-Sonoma!!!
I do not know what I would do without that place!!!

We buy these turkeys all the time and they are wonderful!

Willie Bird Organic Free-Range Turkey

Don't feel like making your gravy from scratch, well this makes an awesome gravy!

Turkey Gravy Base

Hot soup that tastes great and is easy to make! This is a favorite in our home!

Organic Butternut Squash Puree

This next ingredient can be used so many ways - I always have it in my pantry!

Pecan Pumpkin Butter

Personally, I do not like cranberry sauce, but this is my husbands favorite!

Apple-Orange Cranberry Relish

Well, there are more, but you get the picture!!!
Coming next - recipes incorporating these ingredients!
