Friday Food Facts

Hello and Welcome!

Come on in, sit down and stay awhile. Today is Friday Food Facts - enjoy!

A1 STEAK SAUCE

A1 Steak Sauce is said to have been created sometime in the late 1820's by Henderson William Brand, the Chef to England's King George IV. The king was so pleased with the new sauce, he proclaimed it ‘A number 1’ - or ‘A1’ for short.

After the king's death in 1830, Brand started his own business producing meat extracts along with A1 Sauce. The sauce became popular with the public, and won awards at international expositions in London and Paris between 1862 and 1900. G.F Heublein & Bros. (a major wine and spirit importer) began to import A1 Steak Sauce to America in 1906, eventually purchased the rights to the sauce and in 1918 began manufacturing A1 in Hartford, Connecticut.

During Prohibition, which destroyed many other wine and spirits producers, sales of A1 Steak Sauce is said to have enabled Heublein to survive. After several acquisitions and mergers, A1 Steak Sauce is now produced by by Kraft Foods in the U.S. and by Renée's Gourmet Foods in Canada

FETTUCCINE ALFREDO

Fettuccine Alfredo was created during the 1920s by restaurateur Alfredo di Lelio, at his restaurant in Rome, 'Alfredo all'Augusteo'. The original consisted of butter, cream, fresh ground black pepper and Parmesan cheese.

ALUMINUM CANS

Aluminum cans are thinner than 2 pages of a glossy magazine page, weigh less than ½ ounce, and can withstand more than 90 pounds per square inch of pressure (3 times the pressure of a car tire!).

The first 12 oz aluminum can was introduced by Royal Crown Cola in 1964. It wasn't until 3 years later that Coke started using the aluminum can. Aluminum was introduced in metal can making in 1957.

Aluminum beverage cans were introduced in 1964, and by 1985 the dominated the beverage market. Every day more than 90 million aluminum cans are produced, and about half of them end up being recycled.

i love the A1 story ... it's pretty similar to HP sauce so it doesn't surprise that it's english (originally) ... looking forward to next week!
